Alan Luff
Born Greenwich 1927. Worked in local government and banking. Retired from Shirley,Croydon and moved to the Romney Marsh in 1987. After three years, and a roof collapse, he revived an interest in Art and found time to attempt watercolours. Specifically, it was the wish to paint his music heroes. A life-long lover of music, the preferred subjects to challenge the palette would be Ellington, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Ravel, Debussy and the like, plus great conductors. In tirne, the subject-range widened to include the stark Romney Marsh, its skies, lovely churches and nearby Dungeness. And it is for landscapes these that he is perhaps best known. Approached by Channel 4 to appear on Watercolour Challenge at Groombridge in 1999, he received prasie from artist Michael Chaplin. He has had successes in the annual Sunday Times Competition. Plus many one-man exhibitions, perhaps a favourite being at the Mick Jagger Centre where he exhibited sixty portraits of Jazz musicians. He is President of the Forge Arts Society, based in Lydd, and recently also President of Folkestone Arts Society. He ran a iazz record society in nearby Sandgate for over twenty years and presents many record recitals. He is regular a columnist for Jazz Journal, UK's leading international Jazz magazine.
