The spatulas do very much have the mark of a toymaker - partly the fun and general silliness, but also that I compulsively have to think up new designs and possibilities, although to be economic I have to keep this in check as much as possible. Summing up all these pictures would be the phrase: VERY EASILY DIVERTED. However, the individual variability is definitely a selling point. Another toymaker relic is that I just love to see things used; in fact I tell people that 'various tortures are available for people found NOT using their spatulas'.
The spatulas started originally when I was given some off-cuts by a musical-instrument-maker friend of mine and one bit looked like a duck. The 'tuning fork' musical rattle/spoons things were a direct inspiration for the two-handed spatulas I am manic about institutional variability, and have developed an NNC philosophy - 'Nowhere Near Computers'. I've also lectured in creative writing, English and music as well as 'Craft and Design' in Scotland and given innumerable design workshops."
