Having left school to become a carpenter, John Mainwaring also received some private tution in art which resulted in him selling cartoons to agencies for publication in magazines & newspapers. He discovered woodturning in the early 1970s & found wood carving to more satifisfying & rewarding. From these early beginnings, some highly stylized forms started to emerge and he was offered his first solo exhibition 1976. Since then he has had over 20 exhibitions at different galleries plus many television and media inclusions.
